Peasant stories
For centuries, the peasant chronicles of Siberia and the Urals have been full of events and significant dates. In the age of urbanization, many have already forgotten that just a hundred years ago, almost 90 percent of the population of the Tobolsk province lived in the countryside.
The project aims to preserve and systematize the visual history of rural life in the Tobolsk province and the Tyumen Region over several centuries, which reflects the history of the whole of Russia.
The vast territory of the region, from the steppes to the Yamal tundra, is rich not only in minerals. Agricultural products from Siberia have always been famous far beyond its borders. Many products have received prestigious awards at European international exhibitions. Sosvinsky herring was appreciated by Tsar Peter Alekseevich, and butter was sold in Great Britain.

The project aims to preserve and systematize the visual history of rural life in the Tobolsk province and the Tyumen region over several centuries, which reflects the history of the whole of Russia. Through photographs, stories based on memoirs and archival documents, we plan to present the history of the formation and development of agriculture in Western Siberia since the 19th century in the documentary and artistic genre.

Collectivization, the policy of war communism, surplus, and rural cooperation during the NEP era left their mark. The post-war period was associated with the development of virgin lands seventy years ago, with an attempt to expand the agricultural area in the North, and land reclamation. The south of Western Siberia was considered as a breadbasket for the northern oil and gas regions, where all cereals, including corn, were grown.
The project is being implemented by the non-profit foundation "Cultural Heritage of Western Siberia" using a grant provided by the Russian Foundation for Culture in the framework of the federal project "Creative People" of the national project "Culture".
